Theme: Growing through authentic relationships
Key Verse: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
Following Jesus is personal, but it’s never meant to be private. From the very beginning, Jesus formed a community of disciples who walked together, learned together, failed together, and were shaped by one another. He didn’t disciple them in isolation — He discipled them in relationships. That’s because spiritual growth thrives in community.
One of the greatest dangers in modern discipleship is individualism, the belief that you can grow spiritually without deep connection to others. But the Bible paints a very different picture. In Acts 2, the early church didn’t just meet in the temple; they shared meals, prayed together, supported one another, and held each other accountable. Their growth wasn’t fueled by programs, it was fueled by shared lives.
True community is more than just attending a small group or church service. It means being known, and allowing yourself to know others. It’s messy. It’s honest. And it’s where transformation often accelerates. God uses other people to expose our blind spots, encourage us when we’re weary, and remind us of truth when we’re tempted to forget.
Discipleship in community also includes accountability. That word can sound intimidating, but it’s actually life-giving. When someone lovingly asks you hard
questions, prays with you, and checks in on your walk with Jesus, you’re far more likely to stay the course. We need others to speak into our lives, especially when we’re stuck, struggling, or drifting.
And just as you need others, others need you. You’re not only called to be sharpened, you’re called to sharpen others. Sometimes you’ll be the one receiving encouragement. Other times, you’ll be the one giving it. That mutual responsibility is how the body of Christ grows strong.
So, who really knows you spiritually? Who are you walking with intentionally? The journey of discipleship is too long and too hard to walk alone. Community doesn’t just help you survive; it helps you thrive.
